Cases and matters

One record for each matter, organized by the kind of work, with everything about it a click away.

Modules for different kinds of work

A matter is the top-level unit of work in CLNG. It organizes the data and documents that belong together. Each module defines a kind of work, with its own tabs, workflows and reports.

  • Assignments tracks requests for legal work, such as contract review and drafting. A matter has basic information, a description, status, notes and contacts, plus archive details for retention.
  • Litigation tracks cases through to disposition, with an overview, description, notes and evaluation, and the allegations on each matter.

Modules for claims, third-party claims, labor relations, workers' compensation and family services use the same matter, parties, finance and attachment tools, with an overview and notes on each matter. Reports are available for Assignments and Litigation. The tabs a matter shows depend on its module.

Parties, witnesses and contacts

Where a module supports it, the Parties view holds everyone connected to the matter: the primary party, witnesses, contacts, and related parties, each with the relationship to the primary party.

Allegations

Litigation matters track allegations: the issues, stages and dispositions in the case, in one place on the matter.

Money on the matter

The Finance view tracks costs and exposure on every matter, in the same layout in every module. It captures the numbers that matter to a law office:

  • Prayer amount, maximum value, and awarded or settled amount.
  • Fiscal year, funding source, and probability for the maximum value and the reserve.
  • Expense and indemnity reserves, kept net of the payments drawn against them, and expenditures for general, expert witness, contract counsel and settlements.
  • Payments, each with an object code, payee, and invoice and check numbers.
  • Time, with total hours and total amount.
  • Collections, with projected revenue and amounts collected.

Questions about matters

What kinds of matters can CLNG manage?

CLNG organizes work into modules. Assignments covers advisory and transactional work such as contract review and drafting, and Litigation covers cases from filing through disposition. Modules for claims, third-party claims, labor relations, workers' compensation and family services sit alongside them.

Can we track expenses and reserves on a matter?

Yes. Every matter has a Finance view for payments and reserves. Payments carry an object code, payee, and invoice and check numbers, and the view tracks expense and indemnity reserves, settlements and time.

What happens to closed matters?

Status codes are open or closed types. A closed matter drops out of your dashboard and the reports for open matters, but it stays searchable and appears in reports that include closed matters.
